About me

MY STORY

My name is Petar Rakas. I am from Belgrade City, Republic of Serbia.
I have become high school professor - teacher of theory and practice in construction engineering by job application. I have relevant work experience as construction engineer on construction sites, and before that also I have relevant work experience as craftsman and technician on construction sites. It was great inspiration for me to come on teacher job position in Construction Vocational High School in Belgrade. Education and training for young people at teacher point of view, and at the same time I was in possibility also to stay on construction engineer duty. Great deal!!!
My family is technicly orientated. My father was my first educator and trainer in construction engineering – theory and practice, design and building, craftsman and contractor, my brother was my first coworker (nowdays he is mechanical engineer and professor of technics and informatic technology in elementary school) and our mother is  our heart, soul and breath, .and of course family foundation. love technical science.
I have made an outstanding contribution to the profession, by hard work on education development of new professional occupation in Serbian school system - dry construction fitter (craftsmen for drywall, suspended ceilings and linings made of plasterboards, metal/wood sub construction and insulations). I am one of the co-authors of curriculum. I have developed practice both in school workshop and on construction sites in cooperation with construction companies and entrepreneurs. My result is over 500 educated and trained dry construction fitters.

             Knauf Academy

I have received Knauf Academy Award 2017 (28-30 September, 2017) for 15 years of quality in teaching theory and practice in dry construction systems (Construction Vocational High School in Belgrade City, Republic of Serbia), and over 500 educated and trained, as well employed dry construction fitters. Knauf Academy Awards 2017 received also: Architect Giuseppe Manara (Studio Arch. Manara & Partners, Roma, Italy), and Tatjana Djordjevic (Head of Project management unit - Ministry of Health, Republic of Serbia).

          CLASSROOM ACHIEVEMENT

I teach construction theory and practice. My basic duty is occupational health & safety training. My main duty is practical training for dry construction fitter occupation. Every single student has to be trained professionally for his basic and main duty, and be able to join professional craftsmen on construction site in work.
I provide to my students original support in technical publication (in paper), audio & video clips of professional work, contractor case studies, construction planning and organizing, original tools and materials as well working space positions (workshop), audio & video recording their outcomes and analyzing success and progress.
My greatest success are well-trained and motivated students.
This allows me a great deal of cooperation with construction companies and entrepreneurs, who are willing to take my students to practice on their construction sites, where we work together on my students' education. Practice for my students is based on my method ''one student in one craftmen group.'' My students and the development of their knowledge and skills in practice on construction sites, I follow and direct in cooperation with craftsmen and construction site managers and employers.
Our common goal is to make them good craftsmen, able for professional job after school graduation, and to motivate them to continually professional improvment. My students are paid for their work.
My classroom motto is ''Theory & Practice - Knowledge & Skill - Job & Professional''.

          EDUCATION DEVELOPMENT

Education Development - New professional occupation in Serbian school system - Dry construction fitter (craftsmen for drywall, suspended ceilings and linings made of plasterboards, metal/wood sub construction and insulations) - problems & issues:

  • The most pressing problems are how to make this job professionally interesting for students, and make students to be future-oriented. In the following text I shall write about it.
  • Development was cost-effective. I have support from Knauf Company for my classroom, working space positions (workshop), dry construction materials, professional tools, technical literature, competitions etc. I have also support from construction companies and entrepreneurs for dry construction practice for my students. Our costs are very small. I never had a budget in the past. I shall never have it in the future. I am the only man who is on budget cost like a professor / teacher of theory and practice.
  • This Education Development adequately address the gender dimension, because our program is transformative, and it is possible both for male and female to became my students.
  • Initiative for this Education Development was given at March 2003 both from Knauf Company and Serbian Ministry of education. I like to be innovative, so I took the challenge. My school, co-workers from other vocational schools and I have started pilot project for new students’ dry construction fitter occupation in September 2003 with first students in the classrooms. This pilot project had finished in august 2014 with sustainable estimation, and dry construction fitter became regular professional occupation in Serbian school system.
  • Major changes I would wish to see in the coming 3 years in my own practice are better technical support in information technology and tools & materials & systems solutions. School systems must be more flexible for education and practical training. Also I am planning master studies. I have four years of studies now - I am construction engineer - specialist (contractor), and I would like to go on master studies in construction engineering (studies - one year more); because it is wright time for me to become project designer. I would like also to spread my occupational health & safety program in construction engineering all over the world by using information technology. Occupational Health & Safety is the main problem for young people in education and training for construction engineering. Young people from school as well adults who works on construction sites have fear for their life and health at work, and the best way for them to makes no fear is professional occupational health & safety education & training and risk assessment, good craftsman training and good technical knowledge.

    INNOVATION
My approach in driving innovative and effective instructional practices for my students inside and outside the classroom & workshop is what I call "Photo memory" method. For example, I have one video clip on my YouTube channel, which is de facto animated photo clip. I have shoot a serial of photos in one work operation - metal studs (profiles) cutting. What is the point? Students can learn and memorize all the photos in a row, and do the right procedures in real work place.
I am demonstrating success when my students make money on their practice in construction companies. That is my good job.
My "Photo memory" method is replicable in all other classrooms / workshops for every teaching subject. I have tried photo memory method for construction calculations for contracting, working space organization, construction site organization, working procedures and quality estimations, mathematics and physics and it works as well.

    DEVELOPING GLOBAL CITIZENS
My approach to embedding global citizenship in my classroom is making use of technology to reach out beyond my community and my country.
I am connected with my present and former students over social networks (Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Instagram, YouTube, Flickr and professionally orientated blogs).
I am using Facebook for real time connection with my students in Serbia and the entire world.
A lot of them are working abroad, and I have information about work experience they have in foreign countries in construction engineering. All these information are very useful for my present students and me. We also have our pages and groups on Facebook and Google+, and also we are following professional profiles, pages, groups, channels (Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Instagram and YouTube) and professional blogs in Serbia and all over the world.
My students and I are also connected with other schools, classrooms and workshops abroad by taking a part in Knauf Junior Trophy every year. Knauf Junior Trophy is International Competition of high school students - dry construction fitters from construction vocational schools in Europe.

    IMPACT ON THE COMMUNITY
I was on Knauf Academy 2017 in Serbia (28-30 September, 2017). IMPROVING THE TEACHING PROFESSION
My contribution to the improvement of the teaching profession is to teach my students to love life, growth and development. I know that - Love is active care for life, growth and development; whatever you are love in. That is the secret of my success. That love for life, growth and development makes achievable visions and missions for my students and me. We love our profession. My motto is: ''Your thoughts are your life''. My students and I have our motto: ''Drywall is lifestyle.''
I am already helping to raise the bar of teaching, and I share my best practice with my colleagues. All my profiles on social networks are dedicated to my teacher work and my students. I am on all the places where my students are.
I have made my own YouTube channel and Instagram / Flickr profile, and a lot of video clips & photos in my school classroom / workshop / construction site with my students. We were filming health & safety procedures (security helmets & gloves, glasses, working clothes, security belts etc.) and building procedures in dry construction fitter occupation (drywall, suspended ceilings, linings).
My students are very proud on those video clips & photos, because they have done it well and professionally. But my students also learned to record video clips & photos of their best practice even nowadays when they are working as professionals.
I think that is one of the best teacher practices to make students want to be better every following day in their own profession.

    PREPARING STUDENTS FOR THE FUTURE
Teacher must be in the past, present and future for their students. Teacher is a strategy, tactics and operatics for their students. Teacher must be more interesting then everything that surrounds students, including their thoughts and thinking, because the entire world has become interesting and everything draws attention. Teacher must be just like love & faith & hope.
Teacher must be vision of the future for students, living presence, and understandable past.
The governments, civil society, schools and teachers need to prepare young people for the future, and the only way is to be better than present time to make the best possible future.
I am optimizing education in theory and practice for each student individually, to make them competent for profession and  world that awaits them.
